The number of people in the UK choosing direct cremation has risen significantly in recent years, with some indicators suggesting as many as one in five are opting for an unattended cremation.
We have had a lot of conversations with others in the funeral sector over the last few months, and as Dying Matter Awareness week 2025 begins, the Good Funeral Guide is launching a project to understand more about this shift in choice, and how bereaved people experience it.
We have designed a questionnaire for anyone who has experienced someone dying and then having a direct cremation. If this is something that applies to you, do please take a few minutes to tell us about it.
We would really appreciate insight into how and why the landscape of funerals in the UK appears to be changing.
