Stabat Mater (Pergolesi) – Emma Kirkby & James Bowman

Charles Cowling

A choice of music, today. We offer this for Lyra Mollington’s funeral, still a long, long way off, we earnestly if falteringly hope.

Great piece. The Gillian Fisher and Michael Chance recording on Hyperion is very good too. Bach liked it so much pinched it, changed the text and published it as Psalm 51 adding a viola part. Cheeky boy!

Rosie gave me the version performed by Andreas Scholl and Barbara Bonney. After listening to the entire CD several times, I am just beginning to get to grips with its beauty. Track 1 is sublime. Track 11 is delightfully upbeat. Track 13 has moments of off-key quirkiness. But none of it is suitable for my funeral. I’m having a piper. In a kilt.
