Funeral Director/s: Garfield Gubbin Dip FD(50s). A Cornishman rooted in his community, much loved, highly valued. Follows in the footsteps of his father. Out of death interests include reading, the arts, current affairs. Weakness for Led Zeppelin. Season ticket holder at Plymouth Argyle.
Specific Gravity: Utterly down-to-earth, kindly, easy, and simply dedicated to doing “the best I can for everyone who is kind enough to ask me for help at what is one of the lowest points in their lifetime.” Garfield is calm and he is gentle.
What’s important? Committed to doing what he does as well and as professionally as he can. “It is of paramount importance to keep learning.” Here’s how he sees his job: “As a funeral director I always remember that the funeral is NOT about ME. I try to remain in the background as much as possible. If I can attend to my duties and not get noticed then I know that all has gone well.”
What’s different? This is a very small business, so you get a very personal service. You are never just another client. Makes all the difference.
Services: Your first call will answered by Garfield or by his wife. You will deal with Garfield throughout (there is no one else!) Yes to home visits – that’s about 95% of them. But you are welcome to come to Garfield’s funeral home, the extended bungalow where he lives and works. Yes to coming in to lay out the body. Garfield’s wife will lay out your female dead person if you want. Come in and help if you want – Garfield will invite you. Will gladly help home funeralists. Will dress down if you like: “When bright colours are requested we wear bright ties, which have often been complimented. Estate car alternative to his hearse if you prefer. No website.
Remarks: Garfield does not need this website to promote him; he is as busy as can be in this tight-knit community where everyone knows him. If you want a 'mainstream' funeral director who’ll do his best for you, he is as good as it gets. As he says: “I can only try to continue doing all I am asked, offer as wide a variety as possible and keep pace with the way that trends change and evolve continuously.”
