All Jimmy Savile’s obituaries focussed on how he was not just a rather peculiar disc jockey, but also a generous man with both money (he gave 90 per cent of his earnings away) and his energetic doing of good. However, it’s telling of our secular media that there’s no mention of his devout Catholicism and the fact he went to Mass several times a week. This is surely relevant: his Catholicism was a driving force of his goodness.

well Charles, Jimmy S has now been interred and at an angle of 45 degrees to the Sea

and despite the loss, it was excellent to see that a decent independent (Joseph A Hey & Son of Bradford)were instructed (and not a corporate)- anyone have any idea of the cost of the casket? I did see one that looked fairly similar earlier today for the no small price of £24K

Andrew, how good to hear from you! I think that casket’s a Batesville, and here’s the link to prove it http://www.batesville.co.uk/web/guest/whatwedo/burialcaskets/metal

Cost? I wonder. But if he blew a bit on his sendoff, it was nothing compared to what he gave away. I think we can allow him that. He used to live in the next street to me in Leeds. Completely bonkers but a terrifically good egg. Great to know that, as a country, we still do a good eccentric.

Rupert – yes, as in the following sales pitch from their website –

’16 gauge caskets are enhanced with Batesville’s exclusive Cathodic Protection System, a scientific method that inhibits the formation of rust on outer surfaces to extend corrosion resistance by 2.5 times. In addition, a one-piece rubber gasket helps resist the entry of outside elements into the casket….’
