Liminal Time Workshops

The Liminal Time Workshops were developed by GFG directors Isabel Russo and Fran Hall, and are hosted by Isabel at venues around the UK.

Talk: The Power of Liminal Time - Preparing for the Unspoken

We prepare for births and weddings – so why do we leave the death of the people we love to chance?

In this powerful and tender talk, Isabel will share the vision behind Liminal Time – a groundbreaking new approach to death literacy.

Covering practical and emotional preparedness, and how to create meaningful, contemporary ritual, she’ll speak about the often-overlooked time between death and the funeral, and how we can begin to meet it – not with numbness and overwhelm, but with clarity, creativity and care.

Isabel has taken over 600 funerals, including those of Victoria Wood, Terry Jones and Doris Lessing. She was Head of Ceremonies at Humanists UK for 7 years and is Executive Director of The Good Funeral Guide.

With nearly two decades of experience in ceremonies, end-of-life work, and workshop facilitation, Isabel’s perspective is both deeply human and professionally honed. This is a conversation about grief, yes – but also about leadership, courage, and creating change from the inside out.

This is for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of death – for life!

Workshop: The Power of Liminal Time at Well Bath

“A masterclass in death literacy.. Everyone should have a Liminal Time day!”

A gentle, creative day to prepare for the death of someone you love – before it happens. Through conversation, writing, and reflection, we explore how to meet death practically and emotionally, with clarity and care. This is a quiet, powerful step toward facing life and loss with intention.

For anyone who loves someone who will die – and valuable CPD for those who work in the fields of mental health, end of life care, ceremony, and bereavement.

Conference: Funeral and Death Ritual for the modern world

Co-creation, participation, exploration

Funerals and rituals can be powerful in supporting bereaved people to begin to adjust to a new way of living with loss and love. They are often inhabiting a liminal place, so are amazing to work with due to their openness in their personal meaning making processes. This creative one-day conference explores how we can co-create powefull events that support and build upon this meaning making. With an emphasis on how we can help individuals, families and communities to tell their people’s stories with more than just words. We look at the importance of participation and how to craft connecting events. As well as exploring the amazing array of what is possible, we will also look at using ritual in more limiting spaces.

We are delighted to have some amazing speakers and workshop leaders including: Alexandra Derwen (Lost Rites author, doula, ceremonialist), Isabel Russo (Liminal Time workshops and ceremony designer), Rosalie Kuyvenhoven (Rituals Today) , Dr Katy Vigurs & Lindsey Vigurs (Dead Good Legacies), Ellie Harrison (Grief Series/Polite Rebellion  and Jenny Gaskell (celebrant, performer , art maker). Art work by @dylantcollard .Creative ritual making activity. There are also optional extras of a shared meal social in the evening and tie in additional full day workshops the following day.
