Richard III latest – Mail campaigns for state funeral

You couldn’t make it up.

When the remains of the last Tsar of All the Russias, Nicholas II, and some of his family were found down a disused mineshaft outside Yekaterinburg in the 1990s, the government of Boris Yeltsin held a full state funeral in the cathedral of St Peter and St Paul in St Petersburg. I believe we should do something similar for Richard III, if these bones are his.

A decent (quiet) burial maybe but a full state funeral? Using public money?

Why not a state funeral? Think of the tourism. And I think we owe it to Richard. He wasn’t a bad guy, just smeared by the blackest propaganda.

I guess it has to do with how much meaning Richard has for the living. Could be a bit of a damp squib if only a little gaggle turns up?

Thanks for the vote in favour, MM. You clearly have a thing for those whom history has dissed, judging by your blog: http://gillesderaiswasinnocent.blogspot.co.uk/

Richard III, a proud northerner, had expressed a wish to be buried at York Minster. His faith was Catholic, being pre-Reformation. The CofE and Catholic Churches should, therefore, collaborate: a Catholic requiem mass in a cathedral that’s now CofE. Royals and other dignitaries can attend if they wish, as media can record and observers line the streets. But the main thing is to do what the deceased would have wanted. That’s the usual celebrant line, anyway.
