Is death a he or a she?
(Question taken from the Surrealist Philosophy Exam
[…] response to this post which wondered whether Reaper G is male or […]
Death is female – as all of us girls know wearing black is wonderfully sliming
Vale, here was a great opportunity to use our new polling feature, and you passed it up. I must school you in its use.
Charles, well Ann Widdicombe, pictured nearby, did say Michael Howard had ‘something of the night about him’.
Like the blog’s new look!
Quite so, Richard. We’ve done her, of course: https://www.goodfuneralguide.co.uk/2011/02/la-santa-muerte/
Thanks for the Skinny One.
Tomorrow, we hope to prove that Death is (hardly surprising when you think about it) a high-ranking member of the Conservative and Unionist Party. Stand by.
Grim Reaper or Grim Reaperess depending on the skeleton beneath the hooded robe.
In some Latin countries, Santa Muerte is referred to as Señora de las Sombras (Lady of the Shadows), or La Flaca (The Skinny One).
If the figure in the picture above turned round, you’d find there was no face in the hood at all, just darkness, nothingness. He/she/it doesn’t need a scythe, that’s just because total nothingness is so difficult for us to comprehend.
Surely we can fashion Death in whatever way we please? In my case the approach of Death will be heralded by the appearance of my trustee Lurcher, followed by Death herself.
What nationality is Death? What language does he or she speak? What colour is her skin, are his eyes? Is he vegetarian or does he eat flesh? Is he friends with your worst enemy, does she hate your lover?
I’m going to have to answer all these Before I Die now, so I suppose next time I go to the toilet I’m going to have lots to think about! Please don’t come for me just jet, dear!
According to the excellent Mr Gaiman, female. One of the best anthropomorphic representations of Death I have seen. But then, of course the Pratchettite faction would say male, and inclined towards cocktails.
I think I’m going t have to take the ‘vomit’ option on this one!
