An ossuary is a chest, building, well, or site made to serve as the final resting place of human skeletal remains.

These are photographs of the ossuary in the ancient town of Evora in Portugal. It is estimated to contains the remains of over 5000 people as well as two mummified corpses.

More information about the chapel and more photographs here.

What an incredible place! Why did they build them? And why did they build them like that? Fascinating. Thanks Vale.

The official answer is that they needed space in the burial grounds – but there’s clearly a lot more going on here.

I’m posting more through the week – seems fitting with All Hallows only a few days away.
