Begging for a caption

Shirley sent me this striking picture by email from America.

Me to Shirley: Intercession in action. I wonder if she’s there to make his prayers more effective, or because she’s family.

Shirley to me: I wonder what the backstory is here – there are no other graves in the background, so I wonder if it is private property. They are clearly posing in a way that reminds me of those pre-renaissance veneration portraits. Was it common practice to take a picture with a grave? I personally haven’t seen this kind of portrait before.

Who is Shirley? Shirley is The Modern Mourner.

What’s going on here?

Caption:

“If you’ve finished, Sister, I only came here for a wee.”

“For God’s sake, no sooner does the misses finally croak than the girlfriend gets religion.”

Without any especially funny caption in mind, I couldn’t help wondering what the good John Cleese was doing in the sister’s company.
