Funeral Director/s: Miss Carol Aston. Established this business in 2000 and works out of the premises of AW Hughes and Son, which offers a more traditional service. For all that, the two operations overlap greatly. Carol is an artist. When she was a full-time artist she had her own coffin shop nearby and was three times nominated for the Turner Prize for her handpainted coffins, which are now to be found in galleries throughout Europe. She subsequently decided to channel her creativity into arranging highly personalised funerals. The funeral home is blissfully situated in a valley on the Welsh border close to its own natural burial ground, Offa's Orchard. Out of hours, Carol is a devoted horsewoman.
Specific Gravity: There's nothing wacky or alternative about Purple Funerals, in case the name had led you to suppose that there might be. Carol works with people who want an eco-friendly funeral. These often have horsedrawn hearse, and for these both Carol and her assistant, Sarah, dress up splendidly and correctly in traditional attire.
What’s important? In addition to listening to you carefully and intelligently and helping you to create the funeral you want, Carol can offer you a beautiful willow coffin from her own range, one of them shaped like a boat, or she can hand paint a coffin for you. See examples on her website.
What’s different? If you feel that other funeral directors may not know precisely where you are coming from, Carol most certainly will. At the same time, she is very much a member of this rural community, very close to how people think.
Services: Your call will be answered by Carol. She will be there for you throughout. Yes to a home visit. Yes to you coming in and laying out and dressing the person who has died. Will gladly work with those who wish to care for their dead at home. Experienced in working with families from all ethnic and religious groups.
Remarks: Carol is an especially nice and interesting person dedicated to ecologically friendly funerals. The natural burial ground, Offa's Orchard, adjoins the funeral home and is itself a blissful spot. In order to protect its ecological integrity, only The Purple Funeral Company and AW Hughes & Son are allowed to use it.

Carol arranged my husband’s funeral and everyone who attended said it was the best funeral they’d ever been to. We had a wicker coffin brought by motorbike, doves released and a wonderful champagne buffet afterwards. She is extremely professional yet very approachable and I would recommend her services to anyone wanting a “special” funeral.
