Funeral Director/s: Susan Whymark (30s). Trained with a family firm and earned her Dip FD, then worked with big conglomerate. Inspired to do this work by the death of her grandmother, when she realised “what a privilege it is to help at such an awful time.” Inspired to set up on her own as the only way to give families the time and attention they need — that describes her commitment. Out of death interests span walking the dog, yoga, card making, music, movies and travel.
Specific Gravity: Feminine. Susan works closely with her mum, Dianne, 41 years a nurse, 21 of them in palliative care. Bright,modern premises. Professionalism combined with human warmth and no absence of humour. Susan likes to dress up for a funeral: frock coat, riding hat, pinstripe skirt, lightweight version in summer, but will notch down according to your wishes.
What’s important? Believes that "everyone should be involved in their loved one's funeral as much as they wish." Sets great store by doing things properly. Proud of what she does.
What’s different? In this rural part of Suffolk where people come to retire some distance from their families, Susan offers free transport to funeral related appointments — registrar, chapel of rest. She tends graves for those who move away, and takes flowers on anniversaries, etc. Does not get involved with ceremony planning but can put you in touch with good celebrants of all sorts. Aftercare bereavement group, and referral to specialist counselling as appropriate.
Services: Your call will be answered by Susan, Dianne or Joan. You can usually expect to deal with the same FD throughout. Yes to home visits. Yes to coming in to help lay out the body. No embalming unless agreed. Consultancy offered to home funeralists, though experience has taught her that they often do not research enough, and too late discover that “we are here for a reason.” Quite so. Susan does not own her own vehicles but hires what you want.
Remarks: Quietly passionate and a very nice human being. Lovely, you might say. Essentially conventional, but open to other ways of doing things. Makes masses of time for you and really tries her best to be all things to all people.
