Funeral Director/s: Sam Wilding DipFD (30s). Friendly, personable, one of us. Not sure exactly why he ever wanted to be a funeral director but was drawn to it when still at school. He’s a natural. He’s also a strong believer in professionalism, and has been trained to the highest ethical standards by the renowned Sheila Dicks. These are standards that never slip. Behind the scenes, Sam is astonishingly correct and respectful. Out of death interests include his young family and long walks around the Isle of Portland, where he lives (he is the island’s only resident funeral director). He also assists his wife Melody in running the Second Edition Majorettes. “It’s a very worthwhile and rewarding thing to do, and I get not to be an undertaker for a couple of hours a week!”
Specific Gravity: Sam knows how to put on a good show and look the part in traditional attire. One of the few who carries it off superbly. Perfectly happy to dress down if that’s what you want. After all, he says, “the funeral is not about how good I look!” If you don’t want a hearse, there’s the Fiat private ambulance, and for children the black Fiat Multipla.
What’s important? Sam is one of those funeral directors who will really will do his very best to see that you get what you want, whatever that takes. He observes that people are spending much longer making their funeral arrangements, “and so they should be. We are ready to deal with anything that comes along!”
What’s different? What marks Sam out is the deep seriousness of his commitment to the profession of funeral director, and his pride in that.
Services: Your call will be answered either by Sam or Melody, who also works at the funeral home. You will deal with Sam throughout unless he goes on holiday, in which case he will introduce you to his 2 i/c. If you want a female FD, Mel will work with you. Yes to home visits, which what most people prefer. Has even arranged a funeral through Facebook. Melody will lay out a female body. Yes to you coming in to lay out the body. In two minds about embalming, but will talk you through it if he thinks it’ll make a difference. Excellent secular celebrant, Leslie Scrase, on his books (a local favourite). Not many minority ethnic groups hereabouts, but completely willing to accommodate. Very happy to work with home funeralists. Chapel of rest also on the isle of Portland (Tophill), a converted Methodist chapel. Rose Funeral Service is one of 5 branches of Dorchester based Grassby Funeral Service.
Remarks: Very nice people, all of them, the sort who get alongside you. Behind the scenes professionalism of the highest calibre. Safe hands and sincerity of care.
