Funeral Director/s: Robin Hyde-Chambers. Robin's background is equestrian. He used to supply horse-drawn hearses to funeral directors. He felt himself drawn to be a funeral director and, having made the switch, he says: "I swiftly found myself where I belonged". Robin retains an interest in horses and keeps some of his own. He admits to being something of a film buff. He is also a keen public speaker.
Specific Gravity: If it's a traditional funeral you want, Robin has high standards of turnout - the full Victorian costume, black lined with burgundy. He is entirely happy to dress as you wish. He finds that many people like him to wear a tie whose colour represents the personality of the person who has died. In addition to his standard funeral cars he can offer you a hearse in white or silver. And he can also offer you the most reasonably priced horsedrawn hearse in the area.
What’s important? Robin is aware that, as clients become better informed, they are more focused than ever on value for money. He thinks this is a very good discipline of all funeral directors. As he says, "A better informed client makes a better informed decision." He is prepared to spend as long as it takes considering those choices with you.
What’s different? Robin offers all clients a free bereavement befriending service run by his mother, formerly head of the Southwark Bereavement Council.
Services: Your call will be answered by Claire Hyde-Chambers. Whoever you first meet, Robin or Claire, will look after you all the way through and be there for you on the day of the funeral. Same-sex person to lay out the person who has died if you wish. Yes to home visit. Favours embalming. Come in and help wash and dress the person who has died if you wish. Experienced in looking after all ethnic groups. If you don't want a full-on religious funeral, Robin can put you in touch with an excellent celebrant nearby, Ann Baeppler. Fees structure very transparent and good value. Car parking by arrangement with Robinson's florist's opposite.
Remarks: Forward thinking and respectful of tradition, here is a young business which tries harder than most and is spoken of with both admiration and affection by those who have used it.
