Funeral Director/s: Donald Hinks together with his daughters Lavinia and Mandy. It’s a bit of a dream team, this. Donald and Lavinia conduct funerals; Mandy is much happier in a back office role keeping the two of them running smoothly. The business was started some twenty years ago by Peter, a local builder... (a bit more history needed here) Premises in the heart of the village next to Donald’s bungalow, and very much a place that people pass, not with a shudder, but with a wave.
Specific Gravity: The very best sort of country undertaker. They level with you from the word go. It is very rare that you meet funeral directors with so little sense of their own importance. They can do formal or informal with the greatest of ease and aplomb. You name it. We can’t think of any type of client who would be happiest with them. They are, truly, funeral directors for all.
What’s important? A very personal service from people just like you. Well known and well liked, they are at the heart of their community. Very good listeners, very careful to get it right for you, and incredibly warm, easy to be with. Capable, too. Dependable. The best sort of professional because their professionalism is not obtrusive.
What’s different? You don’t get any sense at all that these people inhabit a different world from us. No hush and awe, here, no gloom. Just lovely people at your side who give you good sensible advice and see it through with you.
Services: Your call will be answered by Mandy or Lavinia by day, or by Donald at night. Whoever you make arrangements with will conduct your funeral on the day. Will happily visit you at home. Do come in and wash and dress the person who’s died. Happy to be a consultant to home funeralists. Not advocates of embalming, but can arrange it for you. Same sex person to lay out your dead person if you wish. Many green connections, and very highly rated by the Natural Death Centre.
Remarks: Having given them top marks for their professionalism, we’d need to go somewhere off the scale to give them a mark for downright niceness. You’ll be glad you found them. As to their fees, we put it to them that they could bring them up to what most others charge but they expressed no interest. “Why would we want to?

Donald and family have organised the funerals of my father and my husband. They are a credit to the profession and a thoroughly lovely team too. I would highly recommend anyone who has lost someone to get in touch with them and let them guide you sensitively through what is unarguably a very sad time.

Truly lovely people who conducted my wife’s funeral in 2006 and will shortly be doing the same for me, both at the Woodland Burial Ground near Shillingstone. I recommend them highly for their compassion, sincerity and professionalism.

Lavinia & her lovely family have organised the funeral of my son aged 20 in 2004 & just recently that of my elderly mother. Two very different occasions … each with special considerations needed … & this family conducted both with sensitivity, kindness & the utmost compassion.
I cannot praise them enough for being so caring every step of the way.
I recommend them to everyone who has to face this difficult time.
