Funeral Director/s: Philip Tomlins, Dip FD. Not to be confused with Philip Tomlins Ltd in The Leys. Philip worked there years ago when it was an independent business, but it sold up and is now a branch of Co-operative Funeralcare. It has nothing in common with Merstow Green. Philip is a born funeral director. He dresses well - smart dark suit and maroon waistcoat. He's softly spoken, kind, attentive and completely sincere. He is also - and this is not necessarily immediately apparent - a deep thinker, always pondering better ways of doing his work - a rare and admirable quality. The funeral home is a spacious and lovely 18th century building, beautifully decorated and furnished, light, airy and welcoming. There is plenty of parking in the pay-and-display just outside.

Specific Gravity: Philip inclines to traditional formal dress, and he does it very well. The quality of the man invests his bearers with a strong sense of right conduct, and this creates a very special sense of occasion. He is happy to drop his level of formality to a smart suit and tie. He is a perfectionist and he likes everything to be just so, but never in an obtrusive way.

What’s important? Philip and his team are, above all, very nice people. They pride themselves on the amount of time they can give you. Having observed them at work we can tell you that nothing is too much trouble. They really are unusually dedicated.

What’s different? Perhaps the quality which most marks this funeral home as different is its unhurriedness, its stillness. You'll never feel as if you are part of their busy day. The best funeral directors are famous for their punctuality; the very best of all are never seen to rush. This place provides a very welcome oasis.

Services: You call will be answered by ____________. Just one of these will look after you from start to finish. Will come and make arrangements at your home. Very happy if you’d like to come in and help wash and dress the body of the person who has died. Will very happily work with home funeralists. Same sex funeral director to lay out the body if you wish. Experienced at working with all ethnic groups.

Remarks: Feels like a very safe haven -- and you'll feel as if you are in very safe hands. These people are superb professionals, but they wear their professionalism lightly. All you see is their human side, and there's plenty of that. This is a young business offering superb personal service and excellent value for money.

I am an avid follower of the funeral industry and was in Evesham briefly earlier this month (March 2010). I dropped in, unannounced, mainly to see if Philip had readily available details of his professional charges. He did not but this made little difference. I was after being welcomed by his Mum, immediately met by Philip, who exuded a completely relaxed personality. Over coffee, brought by his Mum, we had a decent chat (in calm surroundings) as to the state of the business and the role of the independents. Such friendliness and hospitality to a complete stranger can only be similarly translated to a client. As I was leaving, Philip made a very well remembered comment – that if he was available, he would always go and assist in the removal of the person who had died. That I felt makes good and decent independents stand out from the corporate crowd. A very decent touch. I’m sure that his business will do very well. Oh, I also liked the maroon waistcoat.
