Funeral Director/s: Paul Allcock, with his father Terry, a onetime Canary, and other members of the family, founded this small family business in 2000. Paul left school at 16, joined a local funeral director and, when it sold out to a big chain, felt uncomfortable with the way things were going. This impelled him to do it his way, properly, and become his own boss. Read the whole charming story on their website - which even has their terms and conditions on it. You don't often see that. He's an impressive fellow, Paul, highly capable and very humane. Out of death interests involve sports, mostly -- and plenty of Carrow Road. Paul is also a bereavement counsellor and chair of Cruse, Eastern Region.
Specific Gravity: Smart and not Victorian. Dark suits with silver ties which go with their silver Mercedes hearse and limousines. Their admirable philosophy is: "Nothing is worn to attract undue attention away from the mourners." Attractive, spacious, gloom-free premises in a big former pub on the corner of a residential street.
What’s important? The big belief here is that "all members of the community should be offered the same care and respect, irrespective of their circumstances." In other words, everyone gets the best service they can offer. Allcocks is staffed almost entirely by family members. They are a notably impressive lot, warm, friendly and unhurried - of a far higher calibre than most funeral home personnel. Very keen to get it right for you, whatever that might be - they're not the sort to look disapproving or dismayed or baffled. In their own words, "The services we offer are those that the family request. In every case we try our best to accommodate the family's wishes, however bizarre they might be."
What’s different? It's quality of service that marks out Allcock's and makes them outstanding. Paul is also a funeral celebrant and will both create and lead your funeral ceremony for a very modest fee.
Services: Your call will be answered by Paul Allcock, Sharon Ford, Alison Allcock, Terry Allcock, Laura Stapley, Natalie Ford or Philip Allcock. The first funeral director you deal with, either Paul, Sharon, Alison or Terry, will look after you throughout and be there on the day of the funeral. Yes to home visit. Yes to you coming in and laying out and dressing the body. No to embalming unless really necessary. Will work with home funeralists. Minority ethnic groups very welcome. Remarks: In a city with a large number of funeral directors, many of which actually belong to big chains, it is good to come across a clear leader, by any standards an impressively professional and genuinely caring business - and a real family concern.
