Lapidary

lap·i·dar·yadjective: characterized by an exactitude and extreme refinement that suggests gem cutting: a lapidary style; lapidary verse. Of, pertaining to, or suggestive of inscriptions on stone monuments.

And what about the epitaph above? (Click it to make it bigger.) They knew how to tell it in them days.

I read into Moses Haughton’s epitaph a certain frustration that his talent as an artist wasn’t insufficiently recognised. Wikipedia describes him as a retiring sort, perhaps one reason.

This site lets us judge him on his work. Nothing to write home about as a portrait painter but his still lives of dead fish ain’t bad. The vase of flowers is best, good at glass and petals.

Great link, Richard. Thanks. I think if your speciality is dead fish it affects your portraiture. Yes, a life appropriately live out of the limelight. Possibly a bit of Brumie chippeness about the London elite — our painters are as good as yours, you metro elite slickers.
