I read into Moses Haughton’s epitaph a certain frustration that his talent as an artist wasn’t insufficiently recognised. Wikipedia describes him as a retiring sort, perhaps one reason.
This site lets us judge him on his work. Nothing to write home about as a portrait painter but his still lives of dead fish ain’t bad. The vase of flowers is best, good at glass and petals.

Great link, Richard. Thanks. I think if your speciality is dead fish it affects your portraiture. Yes, a life appropriately live out of the limelight. Possibly a bit of Brumie chippeness about the London elite — our painters are as good as yours, you metro elite slickers.
