May the Long Time Sun
Shine upon you
All love surround you
And the pure light
within you
Guide your way on
Guide your way on

May the Long Time Sun
Shine upon you
All love surround you
And the pure light
within you
Guide your way on
Guide your way on

(It’s an old Gaelic blessing)

This blessing is used to conclude the Incredible String Band’s 13-minute masterwork, “A Very Cellular Song” on their album “The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter.” The ISB probably seem to many the height of 60s hippy feyness, to others spiritual seekers who generated beautiful music as a tool of enlightenment. Or both. I prefer their slightly fevered, chanting version to this one, which seems bland to me. But I guess in both versions the key thought is that it is the pure light within you that will guide you on.

The ISB certainly weren’t – aren’t – boring!

Ah Charles, “these fragments I’le shore ‘gainst my ruin…”
Just a big ragbag of stuff from here and there and then and now that can’t remember where her glasses are! Thanks for the link, the sound’s remarkably good for YouTube and some kind person has taken the trouble to write down all the words. Very helpful.

I don’t have much of the ISB, (one or two albums, I think) but I have a lot of Robin Williamson’s later materia, including his story telling. Sheer genius!

I was arrested for jaywalking on the side of the motorway once. We had been travelling all night and just been dumped out of a car in the middle of spaghetti junction. It was dawn and we were singing this as the police car drew up. Happy (hippy) days…

Thanks for those new words. Timing’s perfect.

Just nicked them for a funeral next week – perfect – lady of spiritualist belief but had broken with her church.

Vale? Vale? Respect man!

Vale, probably a good job the police picked you up, you’d be still walking in that never ending loop of motorway magic/mayhem. Apparently all these massive junctions ( 9/10 anyway) are so constructed because they have to be symmetrical so that we could theoretically, if necessary, swap to driving on the right.
