A lament composed by Josquin des Prez on the occasion of the death of his predecessor Johannes Ockeghem in February 1497

Edward Wickham, Director of Music at St Catharine’s College, Oxford, says, “In my experience of programming medieval and Renaissance music with my group the Clerks, when we arrive at Josquin’s Lament there is an almost audible sigh of recognition from the audience, even from those who have never heard it. It sounds familiar and modern.”

Ah, I knew there must be something in it. I think it rather dull, Phoebe, but then I have the sensibility of a horse trough.

Just wait and see what I’ve got for you tomorrow!

Well, each to their own I suppose…not even good for background music?! Looking forward to what you’ve got in store for me tomorrow!

Dear Horsetrough, thanks for continuing to find us splendid and interesting music even when you don’t much like it yourself!
Bet the Clerks could have done without the coughers in this live recording. Still, I guess it shows it has that live quality.
