Charles would have risked excommunication by having this on his website – that was the punishment for anyone found singing this outside of the Vatican ceremony for which it was intended. Happily for the GFG, the well-kept secret out was smuggled out, so the story goes, by young Mozart, who sat there listening to it and – scribbling it down by ear. In the face of such genius, the ban was lifted!

Didn’t Mozart write the whole thing out after the “gig”? I watched the documentary about it ages ago but that’s what I gathered from it…very clever either way.
Well apparently (I may get swiftly corrected here) most composers write horizontally, and then orchestrate the parts. Little Wolfie could write vertically, harmony and melodies as he went along. So maybe that’s how he could do it. Ach mein Gott, der liddle wunderkind!

I think we all agree that Mozart made genius look plodding and ordinary. He was something entirely else.
Enjoyed singing that at school but Miserere wins by a mile for me! Agree with you about Mozart. I have to say I only really listen his requiem, saying that his music must have been ground-breaking at the time and is a genius by any stretch of the imagination.
I can’t be swayed from Miserere, psalm 51 must be wonderful for those woe, woe and thrice woe days! Though perhaps we in this business are more victims of the cords of death have entangled me psalms??
