Am I being over dramatic to feel for the person whose poor decapitated body this belonged to?
Somebody’s ancestor.
Made to look like a circus dog.
Without so much as a ‘by your leave’?

Depends how you look at it, I guess. A skull is either a specific someone’s head or a universal emblem of death. Me? I hate the way archaeologists gleefully dig up the dead, then present them together with their grave goods to the gaze of the curious.

I hadn’t meant to declare my hand and rather wish I’d held to that. To me, this is someone ridiculised.

Noble sentiment, exquisitely expressed, dear James.

It’s a subtle gradation, innit, the move from memento mori to disrespect? I’ve been wondering what the stages are in this instance. The ruff, for sure, given its circus-dog connotations. Especially in combination with the full-on ‘gaze’ of the skull?
