“I do think people need ritual, and probably particularly funerals. Because no one wants to be told, “Okay, you have a dead relative. Go bury him someplace.” They want to know that something will kick in now. It will be taken out of my hands, and everyone will know what to do.”

Christopher Hitchens

Here’s a challenge for secularists: when we can evolve rituals that in our hearts we think would have satisfied the Hitch, we’ll have done the job. Vale CH.

Yes, people do want things taken out of their hands, but isn’t that why they usually come away from a funeral feeling so empty-handed?

Dear, wonderful, brave Hitch. Who exposed Mother Teresa as the figurehead of the damaging fraud perpetrated on ‘her’ people, and who poked so much we take as untouchable in the eye.
I love you and will miss you. Who will speak clearly now you have gone?
