Spooky Scary Skeletons

As a final fling – and to get in the mood for Halloween – here’s Disney’s classic from 1929, edited to include Andrew Gold’s great song ‘Spooky scary skeletons’. The song starts about 1.30secs into the video.

Spooky scary skeletons
Send shivers down your spine
Shrieking skulls will shock your soul
Seal your doom tonight

Spooky scary skeletons
Speak with such a screech
You’ll shake and shudder in surprise
To hear these zombies shriek

We’re sorry skeletons
You’re so misunderstood
You only want to socialize
But I don’t think we should

Cause spooky scary skeletons
Shout startling shrilly screams
They’ll sneak from their sarcophagus
And just won’t leave you be

Spirits supernatural
Are shy what’s all the fuss
But sacks of bones seem so unsafe
It’s semi-serious!

Spooky scary skeletons
Are silly all the same
They’ll smile and scrabble slowly by
And drive you so insane

Sticks and stones will break your bones
They seldom let you snooze
Spooky scary skeletons
Will wake you with a boo!

It is odd that such robust humour emerges with skeletons, when such general aversion and gravity predominates at all other times in the process of dealing with death.
I was given a pen with a skeleton on top (black top hat in outstretched hand) that dances when you twist it.
Are skeletons the safety valve for our feelings, secured by time and distance from the body?
Yet bones in catacombs are undeniably chilling.
