The landscape around this eloquent and utterly chilling shot isn’t so much wrecked as scoured bare.

Charles, I can scarcely imagine a better testimony to the importance of having enduring grave monuments.

When all else succumbs, in one way or another, to the destruction that time must inevitably bring, the spiritual and social anchoring power of such monuments re-emerges. Sometimes grave stones are the only points of reference that remain.

(It need hardly be mentioned how a woodland cemetery would look after such a natural disaster.)
